Microsoft System Information

This new utility program provides a set of tools to help maintain your PC in healthy condition, and solve problems when they arise. Run it from the Start menu under Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Information.

On the Tools menu are the 10 entries shown below. Click the module names on the menu to find out more about each one.

  • The System Information window is divided into two panes. On the left is an expandable tree listing the major hardware and software components and resources in your system. Expand and contract parts of the tree by clicking on the [+] and [–] symbols. In the right-hand pane is information about the item selected on the left.

    What you see ranges from nothing at all (the component or resource might not be available on your PC, for example infrared devices) or a driver version or date, up to a detailed and useful listing. In some cases radio buttons will let you specify the level of detail.
